Overview

Strengths

  • Hero is a permanent +84% Attack and +20% Critical Hit Resistance at Transcend 5.
  • Swordbringer raises main-stat potency by 160% on gear at item level 160 or lower.
  • Overdrive cleaves the front for 528% Attack and self-buffs Attack +70% for 14s.

Weaknesses

  • D DPS and D Tank across PVE, Raids, Brawl, and PVP. The steroids do not create a meta seat.
  • Swordbringer’s item-level cap means the passive falls off as you outgear early equipment.
  • Rising Smash is a plain 368% front cleave with no CC, shield, or party buff attached.

Investment

Extra copies

Prefer the Holy Sword's Blessing card over rushing every Transcend copy first. The signature card is the cleaner early upgrade on a 4★ who awakens easily.

Transcend stop

If you keep him, finish T5 and Awaken. 4★ copies come fast, and the passive ranks are what little power he has.

Review

Swordbringer Updated Sep 5, 2026

Ethan is a 4★ Frost Knight in the front line with a name the site shares and a kit that still grades D DPS / D Tank in PVE, Raids, Brawl, and PVP. He is a self-buff bruiser: big Attack passive, a gear-mastery passive for early item levels, an Ultimate that double-dips Attack, and an Active that is just damage. Durable enough for story fronts; not a long-term tank or carry.

Hero (Passive 2) is the permanent floor: Attack +84% and Critical Hit Resistance +20%. Swordbringer (Passive 1) is the gimmick: Equipment Mastery that increases the potency of equipment main stats by 160%, but only on gear at item level 160 or lower. Skill priority P1 > P2 > Ultimate > Active says play around that mastery while it still applies. Once your frontliner is wearing post-160 gear, Passive 1 is a dead unique and you are left with Hero plus skill damage.

Overdrive, the Ultimate, deals 528% Attack to all enemies in front and grants self Attack +70% for 14s on a 36s cooldown. That is a personal burst window on top of Hero’s +84%. Rising Smash is the Active: 368% Attack to all front enemies, 14s cooldown, no stun, no shred, no shield. Compare that to modern front Knights who convert ults into party utility; Ethan’s buttons mostly feed his own meter.

Synergy listed is Dian Cecht. Cards: Moonlight Swordplay (Ran) and Holy Sword's Blessing (Ethan). Named gear is blank in the brief, so there is no Fragarach-versus-alternative editorial call. Stack Attack and survivability the same way you would any early Knight and move on.

Investment is card-first, with a stop at T5 / Awaken. Rewrite for the site: chase Holy Sword's Blessing before you obsess over every Transcend duplicate, then because 4★ copies are easy to gather, take him through T5 and Awaken if he is still in the lineup. The brief’s point about easy Awaken and welcome skill levels is real for early accounts; it is not a reason to keep investing after a real Fire or Radiance frontliner replaces him.

Field Ethan while Swordbringer’s item-level window still matters and you need a Frost body in front. When gear outruns level 160 and the tier list still says D, bench him without guilt.
